Presentation Description

Earlier this year, Desert CAMFT presented on how private equity corporations, in the service of “new” capitalism, are helping to change the way therapist work and earn a living. In continuing this conversation we are now highlighting the impact of “new” capitalism on our clients. Rates of mental illness have increased dramatically over the past 15 years in the United States and life expectancy continues to decline due to increases in suicide, opioid overdose, and alcoholic. One contributor to these changes are due to new and growing ideologies in capitalism. The “new” capitalism promotes eliminating all restrictions on the market and decreasing government assistance programs. Results of these policies have led to income inequality, disempowerment of workers, outsourcing of manufacturing jobs, inadequate social services, mass incarceration and an expensive and ineffective healthcare system.

Measurable Objectives

  1. Understand what “new” capitalism is and how it impacts mental health and therapists in the United States
  2. Understand how changes in government policy contribute to changes in mental health services
  3. Understand how the “new” capitalism changes mental health for the US population
  4. Discuss two significant ways that mental health providers can advocate for meaningful change
