Presentation Description
Do you do amazing, rewarding work with individual clients but find
yourself stuck with couples? Have you been frustrated when a session
with a couple “goes sideways” and you can’t figure out why? Don’t
worry! You’re still a good therapist, you just need a little training.
Couples therapy is its own specialty with a unique set of skills.
In this workshop you will learn basic skills for couples therapy, why
some of your amazing individual therapy skills don’t work for couples,
and how to adapt some of those skills for work with couple clients. We
will look at the impact of being clear about who is your client and who
you serve when you are working with a couple. And we will discuss
important traits for you to employ and/or develop in your work with
couples which will increase your effectiveness and satisfaction in
serving this challenging and rewarding population.

Measurable Objectives
Based on the learning in this course, participants will be able to
1. List 3 core skills for couples therapy
2. Identify 2 therapy skills which need to be adapted for successful
use in couples therapy
3. Describe 2 ways couples therapy sessions go wrong when
therapists fail to identify the
relationship as the client
4. Describe 2 character traits necessary for successful couples
therapy
