Course Description
The speakers will introduce the nine steps and three stages of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples. This course will examine how partners are guided from disconnectedness to accessibility, responsiveness, and engagement.  Attendees will experience EFT through didactic, experiential, and video presentations.

Karen Dobbins, RN, MS, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist

ICEEFT Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist

Karen Dobbins is a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist who divides her professional time working as a Medical Social Worker at a local hospital and maintaining a private practice in Rancho Mirage, where she utilizes Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in her work with individuals, couples and families.

Karen has spent the past four decades focusing on attachment theory as a maternal-child nurse, completing a thesis on attachment, utilizing EFT in clinical practice, and in her personal life as a wife, mother and part of a family.  

Karen has studied EFT, one of the most rigorously researched and empirically validated approaches to couple therapy, in the EFT communities of Arizona, California, Colorado and Washington, and is dedicated to continued study and sharing of the model.


Jim A. Powell, MA, LMFT

Marriage and Family Therapist

In process of certification as an Emotionally Focused Therapist

Jim Powell works full-time as a Mental Health Services Supervisor with Riverside University Health System – Behavioral Health.  Within the Riverside County department, he worked for many years in the field of drug and alcohol counseling and rehabilitation and today, teaches Substance Use 101 for the department.  Currently, he is working in the Assembly Bill 109 program for Riverside County, supervising the desert staff for individuals, coming both from State Prisons and County Jails, who are re-entering society with the goal of reducing recidivism.  Jim previously was in full-time ministry, serving in several churches, providing ministry-related services to individuals, youth, and families.  Today, he maintains a part-time private practice in Palm Desert, where he utilizes Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in his work with individuals, couples, and families.


This course meets the qualifications for three (3) hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Completion certificates will be awarded for full attendance of the event. 

Course evaluations are required to obtain the completion certificate.

The Desert Chapter of CAMFT is approved by the California Association of Marriage Family Therapists (Provider #62275) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs.  The Desert CAMFT Chapter of CAMFT maintains responsibility for the course and its content.
