Course Description:

Whether they realize it or not, psychotherapists are creators of legal and ethical outcomes, whether for good or for ill. In this workshop, Dave Jensen, JD will instruct attendees on the ten principles that can be applied to help psychotherapists create legal and ethical outcomes, not illegal or unethical ones. This workshop will also spend a significant amount of time reviewing laws and cases concerning patients who are dangerous to third parties, and it will review in detail an actual BBS administrative law proceeding.

Outline for the Class:

9:00 to 9:30            Introduction/Overview of Class
9:30 to 12:00          Defining the Ten Fundamentals of the Profession
1:00 to 3:30            Tarasoff and Cases Involving Patients Dangerous to Others   
3:30 to 4:00            Review of an Actual Administrative Law Case
 

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the ten fundamentals of practicing legally, ethically, safely, and most important, confidently.

2. Recognize three differences between the duty to warn, the duty to protect, and the duty to report.

3. Describe three aspects of a clinician’s credibility as a psychotherapist.

4. List four hallmarks of thorough Tarasoff evaluation. 


Bio for Dave Jensen, J.D.

Dave Jensen has been a Staff Attorney with CAMFT since April 2002. Dave graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s Degree in History, and he received his law degree from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California. In 2016, he was awarded a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies with a Concentration in English from Fort Hays State University. Before joining CAMFT, Dave worked for Foley & Lardner, a large national law firm, where he regularly established and advised nonprofit organizations.  As an attorney with CAMFT, he consults with its members regarding their legal and ethical dilemmas. He is a regular contributor to The Therapist magazine, and he gives numerous law and ethics presentations to chapters, schools, and agencies each year.

This course meets the qualifications for six (6) hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  Completion certificates will be awarded for full attendance of the event. Course evaluations are required to obtain the completion certificate.

The Desert Chapter of CAMFT is approved by the California Association of Marriage Family Therapists (Provider #62275) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs.  The Desert Chapter of CAMFT maintains responsibility for the course and its content.  [This venue is ADA acceptable.
