Course Description:
Individuals with Bipolar disorders often bring to therapy complicated problems involving the need for medical and psychiatric services as well as psychotherapy and family counseling. The panel will provide a brief presentation on the topics of diagnosing and treating Bipolar disorders and issues related to medication management, complications related to duel diagnosis of bipolar disorder and substance use disorders and coordination of care. Audience will be able to pose questions to the panel.
Learning Objectives;
1. Develop greater knowledge related to the use of current medications for the treatment of bipolar disorders as well as their potential side effects
2. Increase awareness of differential diagnostic and treatment issues
3. Increase awareness of effective case coordination techniques
Goals:
1. Gain understanding of factors related to diagnosis and differential diagnoses
2. Identify treatment considerations
3. Increase understanding of current pharmaceutical treatments, awareness of uses and side effects
4. Increase awareness of ways to optimize and coordinate care
Bio
Dr. Ott
Rebecca Ott, DNP, RN, APRN-BC is certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and has worked with patients ages 10-101. She received her Masters of Science-Nursing in 2005 and completed the Doctoral of Nursing Practice in 2015 from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Areas of practice have included outpatient, inpatient and psychiatric emergency medicine in California for a county contracted 5150 evaluation crisis unit. Her areas of specialty have included working with child-adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry in a Geriatric Outreach program in Nebraska, she concentrated on addiction psychiatry in Nebraska while serving as a director for the Crisis Stabilization Unit contracted by Region III, performing detoxification and stabilization before transferring patients to next level of care. Rebecca moved to the Coachella Valley with her husband in March 2013 to be Administrator for Oasis Crisis Stabilization and Psychiatric Health Facility before joining Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation at Rancho Mirage in October 2014.

Gregory McFadden, MD, PhD, completed his medical degree and a PhD in Physiology at the University of Hawaii, School of Medicine. Dr. McFadden completed his Residency and Chief Residency in Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Hospital and also completed a Research Fellowship in Psychopharmacology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Board certified in Psychiatry, he has conducted over 80 FDA-sponsored clinical trials on new medications under study for mood and anxiety disorders at the Feighner Research Institute in San Diego and has lectured widely on their use. He previously maintained a private practice at the Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla, specializing in the treatment of substance use disorders co-occurring with mood and anxiety disorders. Dr. McFadden has been named as a Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association for his work in clinical research and co-occurring disorders. CA license #G60437.
Dr. Lui Associate Medical Director Desert Oasis Health Care
Kawika Liu, MD, PhD, JD is an internist/pediatrician, currently associate medical director for utilization management at DOHC. Previously, he has been a medical director and provider at a rural health center, tribal health center, and FHQCs. He is Clinical Faculty at the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Native Hawaiian Health, John A Burns School of Medicine. Kawika received his MD from St George’s University School of Medicine, his PhD and JD from University of Hawai’i, Manoa. Dr Liu has published in lung cancer and other health inequities in Native Hawaiians. His interests are population health, human rights-based approaches to health, particularly indigenous health, causation in public health, cancer obesity, and asthma. He is the proud father of two daughters, Tanoelani, 13 and Kealalani, 8.

This course meets the qualifications for three (3) hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Completion certificates will be awarded for full attendance of the event. Course evaluations are required to obtain the completion certificate. The Desert Chapter of CAMFT is approved by the California Association of Marriage Family Therapists (Provider #62275) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs. The Desert Chapter of CAMFT maintains responsibility for the course and its content.
